PAINTING WITHOUT FEAR! - One Artist's Approach, in two parts... $150 - no limit

Every time I display my paintings at a tattoo convention, I am approached by people, often tattoo artists, some of them with many years of experience, who tell me they have always wanted to learn how to paint, but were afraid. That's right, "AFRAID". And I think to myself, "REALLY? That's ridiculous!!" There is no reason anyone on Earth, much less a working artist with years of tattooing experience should be afraid to paint, and yet you are... so I'm here to help.
I started taking formal art classes in the fourth grade, and went on to get a Master's Degree; I know all about formal art training, and I know that a lot of it is totally unnecessary to being an artist. ALL YOU NEED IS THE GUTS TO TRY, and the willingness to follow through with where it leads you. What you also need to do is to shed your notions of what art "IS" or "SHOULD BE". You need to learn how to set achievable goals, and follow through with them without trying to be someone that you aren't. Making art is about finding your OWN voice, not just chasing after someone else's.
In this seminar I am going to talk about all of these things and more. I will give you a set of simple exercises and ideas that will help you to get jump started, whether you are starting your first ever painting, or just facing a wall of "Artist's block". With a little help, you'll be able to create your own Survival Guide of sorts to keep you motivated and moving. I wil provide a bibliography and a list of resources to look to for answers to specific questions.
The concepts in this seminar will apply to any art that you want to make. I will be talking about and showing examples of work from a wide variety of artists; not just my own, and I will also be be painting live through most of the seminar to show some examples of how to put these ideas into motion in real life. Although I work in Acrylics, and will be talking mainly about Acrylic paint in this section, the general concepts are ideas that can be applied to help you working in any art medium, including your tattooing.
PART TWO
Will focus more directly on Acrylic paint specifically as a medium. I have worked in Acrylics for more than 20 years, and I find that they are vastly more fun and versatile than many people give them credit for. I will discuss specifics about how to use Acrylic paints beginning with your canvas, to the gesso through whatever you wish to apply on it. I will discuss a wide range of specific products; different types of acrylic paints and painting mediums designed to create a wide range of effects that can mimic oil paint or watercolor or just plain do their own thing. I will talk about brushes, and application techniques as well as subtraction techniques, the joys of layering, and more.
This is an open seminar; anyone attending the convention, tattoo artists, artists who work in other mediums, and non-artists alike are ALL welcome to attend. There is no seating limit. This will be a group participation seminar; your questions and active discussion will be expected. No one will be allowed to leave afraid!!
5 FREAKIN' HOURS!!; $150 each, NO LIMIT!

Friday, Sept 17 10:00-11:30 PM

Adrian Dominic: "Painting with Photoshop"; $50 - no limit
This will be a comprehensive seminar on basic Adobe Photoshop techniques from the ground up. I will start with a basic breakdown of the interface, what brushes I use, and a step by step approach to how I develop the value and color study to transfer into any medium, or as a completed piece of digital fine art. Students are STRONGLY encouraged to bring a sketchbook for taking notes, and/or a laptop with Photoshop and a graphics tablet to work along side of the tutorial. I ill be using version CS2. This a 90 minute seminar will ONLY be offered for free at the Paradise Art Gathering, so DO NOT miss your chance to come up on some secret magic art spells, all for the love of it...

Saturday, Sept. 18 frowm2-4:30

Chris Dingwell: "Still Life Workshop"; free to all attending artists - no limit
Still life is often seen as a rather conventional, and sedate if not outright boring form of painting, but it doesn't need to be that way!! You can create amazing still lives, right in your own space and use them as a tool to learn to see the things around you in new and unique ways. I will be constructing a massive still life from objects that participants bring as well as whatever is available on site. Participants will be asked to help in the assembly. I will give a demonstration on how to make a simple viewfinder to view and select specific parts of the still life to draw from. Participants can create their own works from the still life in whatever medium they choose to bring.
The workshop should last 2-3 hours.
Students need to bring art materials, an 8"X10" piece of sturdy matt board or equivalent, and something to add to the still life.
Ideally, the workshop will take place early in the weekend, and the construction would be available for participants to work from throughout the retreat.

Saturday, Sept. 18 from 5:30-7:30

Guy Aitchison: "Texture"; free to all attending artists - no limit
Guy is known for his realistic textural effects that he uses in both his painting and tattoo work. In this 2 hour workshop, Guy demonstrates a few basic concepts on how texture works and how to use it the most effectively in any artistic medium. He will also be providing some exercises for students to take with them so they can experiment directly with some of the ideas presented in the class.

Sunday, Sept. 19 from 1-2
